A healthy press will mirror the population it serves. However the percentage of employment of ethnic minorities in the media industry is only approximately 8%. In some regional newspapers it can be as low as 3%. This shortfall is leaving the industry at a severe disadvantage.

The George Viner Memorial Fund was set up by the National Union of Journalists to address this shortfall. The fund supports British Black and Asian students through the training they need to gain employment in radio, print and photo journalism. As well as providing course fees, books or travel payments, the Trust provides mentoring, course and careers guidance. This ensures that as many Black and Asian students as possible succeed in their chosen field.

We are able to carry out this valuable work thanks to the continuing support of NUJ members and voluntary donations from those who believe that a multicultural society should have a multicultural press.
